Are you a designer making color booklets? If you are, then you need to know these facts for better booklet printing. I have seen a lot of designers (both amateur and professional) make a few key mistakes that make their booklet printing process quite hard, time consuming and more expensive. This should not really be the case since it should be pretty easy enough and cheap enough to print booklets right?
So to help you designers out there in booklet printing, here are a few “need to know facts” that designers should know when printing booklets.
- Covers can be different in printing – That is right; in booklet printing the cover of course can be different from the body. You can have a more expensive cover, with thicker and glossy paper materials that attract readers, while at the same time the body of the color booklet can have cheaper and simpler paper materials. For some this can be great for their booklet printing, since the cheaper prices of the inside pages can cut 10-15% of the printing costs while at the same time the cover quality is not sacrificed. This is a good thing to know when you are a designer.
- Booklet templates work wonders – Now, all designers should know this, especially for booklet printing. Booklet templates can work wonders in making the booklet development process easier and faster. If you download booklet templates from booklet printing companies, you should usually get great templates with guidelines and printing bleeds that are ideal for production. You should be able to build up your custom booklet drafts quite easily with the templates and the printing companies will have a very easy time printing them. So it is a must to get templates for printing booklets.
- Only High-Res photos are allowed in printing – Now, here is the fact that you should definitely know. You should only use high resolution images for booklet printing. Never use web based, or low resolution images because they will always turn out fuzzy once printed. Always get your images and graphics from direct image sources such as high resolution cameras, or originally created graphics with high resolution. Only these images will appear crystal clear in catalog printing. So make sure you always get that right high-rest image.
- Know your color modes – Digital printing drafts can come in different color modes. The most important that you should know about in booklet printing is the CMYK color mode. The CMYK or Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black color mode is the one used for printing booklets. Make sure that your draft is in this mode when you submit it for printing. Otherwise, the booklet printer will be forced to convert your draft to the appropriate color, which will sometimes cause some colors to change (which you might not necessarily want). So know your color modes and set your drafts to CMYK as early as possible.
- Know your paper options – Finally, you should know your paper options. Different materials of paper can have different effects on your design for booklets. A glossy paper material will make your design shine in the light which may or may not be beneficial for your layout. It really depends on your style and theme, but you have to make sure that your material should always complement your design and not hinder it. So make sure you read up on the different materials that are in use for booklet printing.
So those are the things that designers need to know in booklet printing. Hopefully you have learned quite a deal and would be printing booklets better in the future. Good Luck!
